Jessica understands that a strong middle-class is the foundation of a growing economy, and in Congress she will always be an advocate for hardworking families. That means supporting our small businesses, revitalizing our manufacturing sector, investing in our infrastructure, and ensuring smart spending of our hard-earned tax dollars.
Jessica believes that growing our economy must be our number one priority, and to do that we need fiscal responsibility and forward thinking. That means supporting American companies and American workers, and closing tax loopholes that allow corporations to ship jobs overseas. By investing in our workforce and infrastructure today, we will build a strong economy tomorrow. Both Democrats and Republicans must work together to address our long-term fiscal health and ensure the budget is not balanced on the backs of hardworking Americans. Slashing spending or implementing short-term, short-sighted fixes to address the deficit is pennywise and pound foolish.
Jessica will use her experience working for Fortune 500 companies and on both sides of the aisle to bring common sense solutions back to Washington.
Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy here in Pinellas County and in communities across the country. Increasing the clarity, stability, and transparency of our tax code is key to giving these businesses the confidence they need to hire and grow. We can put Americans back to work by reducing the regulatory burden on small businesses and unleashing their entrepreneurial spirit to spur our economy.
Building a brighter future for Pinellas County starts with investing in our workforce and industry today. Florida’s I-4 technology corridor has the potential to create many new jobs. Research and development coupled with public-private partnerships between businesses and Pinellas’ numerous higher education and training institutions can support the innovation of new technologies and grow local manufacturing and the well-trained workforce these jobs require. Investing in manufacturing and workforce training will spur new industries, attract new businesses, and create new jobs.
As a Member of Congress, Jessica will always fight for Pinellas County’s seniors, and she will oppose all efforts to dismantle or weaken Medicare and Social Security.
Jessica believes we must look for bipartisan, long-term solutions to ensure that seniors have access to quality care and affordable prescription drugs. In Congress, Jessica will fight any attempt to weaken Medicare. She will make certain no senior ever has to choose between a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk, or life-saving medications.
Jessica’s experience working with the Social Security Subcommittee of the House Committee on Ways and Means makes her a passionate defender of the program. She understands that Social Security is the foundation our seniors depend upon – one they have earned after a lifetime of hard work.
Threatening Social Security for political gain is a dangerous game for the millions of Americans who rely on this vital program. As a Member of Congress, Jessica will vehemently fight efforts to weaken Social Security. Like she has done before, Jessica will work with her colleagues on both sides of the aisle to keep the program solvent. Privatization and benefit cuts would only weaken this critical social safety net and throw millions of seniors into poverty. We cannot balance the budget on the backs of seniors.
Educating our children is the key to the future of our nation. She believes that giving our students a high-quality education is the best investment we can make in our future.
We know that investing early in our children’s education makes a difference. We need to empower educators with the resources they need to give each of their students the best education possible. Our students deserve every opportunity to succeed with modern schools and classrooms with the best learning technology, before- and after-school tutoring and support programs, and access to extracurricular activities.
Cost of College
The costs of higher education are out of control and putting debilitating debt burdens on our graduates. Jessica believes that we need to provide more scholarships, grants, loans, debt-forgiveness, and service opportunities to students to finance their education. As a Member of Congress, she will work to bring down federal borrowing rates for students while increasing Pell Grants and other student support.
Learning from Experience
The Tampa Bay area is home to a wealth of educators teaching at all levels, from elementary schools to colleges and universities. Jessica looks forward to gaining their insights and perspectives through an Education Advisory Council, so they can share their experiences in and out of the classroom.
Jessica will always be a strong advocate for women and families, whether protecting women’s access to basic health care services, standing up for equal pay for equal work, or making sure families can afford a high quality education for their children.
While women’s health has been attacked again and again in states across the country the past few years, Jessica believes that medical decisions should be made between a woman and her doctor – not by politicians. She will fight efforts to slash funding for life saving women’s cancer screenings, for a woman’s right to make her own family planning choices and work to protect women and children’s access to health care services.
A Strong Workforce
The participation of women in our workforce continues to grow: Pinellas County estimates that women make up more than half of our labor force. As more women have become the breadwinners at home, the necessity of equal pay for equal work has only grown. As a working woman herself, Jessica will fight for pay equity for all Americans. It is simple: equal work deserves equal pay, regardless of gender, race, or age.
Family Medical Leave
Having been the caregiver for a terminally ill parent, Jessica knows firsthand how critical it is that working families have the ability to care for their loved ones without having to worry about keeping a roof over their head and food on the table. The importance of paid family and medical leave cannot be undervalued. As a Member of Congress, Jessica will work for expansion of this vital program.
After they fought for our country, we need to fight for our veterans. Jessica is committed to serving the needs of our returning heroes including helping them find new civilian jobs, offering higher education and job training opportunities, providing ongoing physical and mental health care, and combating veteran homelessness.
Veterans face an uphill battle when they return to civilian life and re-enter the workforce. As a Member of Congress, Jessica will work to provide tax credits to employers who hire and train returning veterans and to schools who help further their education.
Our wounded warriors have given so much of themselves in service. Jessica believes that we need to do all that we can to care for them. In Congress, she will fight for the needed investments to provide world-class care for battlefield wounds and improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health injuries.
Energy independence and job creation are vital, but they should not come at the expense of our most valuable natural resources. As a Member of Congress, Jessica will ensure that the beautiful beaches she grew up on here in Pinellas remain national treasures for generations to come. To achieve true energy independence, we need a national energy policy that invests in clean energy innovation and ends tax breaks for big oil companies.
It is no secret that America needs to end its dependence on foreign oil. For too long, big oil companies have reaped record profits while Congress rewarded them with billions in tax giveaways at the expense of working families. It is time for a new plan.
Jessica believes that Pinellas County can be a green leader. That is why she supports investing in clean energy technologies and innovation to power our future. These investments have the potential to make us cleaner, greener, safer, more sustainable, and energy independent, all while spurring economic investment and creating new jobs.
Pinellas County is continually cited as having the most beautiful beaches in the country – St. Pete Beach was recently ranked by TripAdvisor as the number-one beach destination in the United States. As a native of St. Petersburg, Jessica grew up with a deep respect for our treasured coastline. In Congress, she will strengthen legislation protecting our coastal waterways.
